Which List Should I Join?

  • smugIT focuses on programming, core system, and IT technical questions. Since it’s an active list, many users filter the emails into a specific folder for easier reading by thread.
  • smugMS is designed for “member service” and operations-related questions, often from non-IT users. It’s a quieter list.

Participate and Post

SMUG is an email distribution list server. Once you subscribe, you’ll start receiving emails in your inbox. Because the list can be busy, many subscribers choose to filter incoming messages into a dedicated folder.

Modify Your Subscription

Alternatively, you can use the self-service pages:
Manage smugIT Subscription
Manage smugMS Subscription

From these pages, you can:

  • Subscribe or Unsubscribe
  • Change to or from digest mode

  • Change your password
  • Set vacation mode
  • And more

List Server Netiquette

Smuggers,

To improve the SMUG experience and address subscriber feedback, we’ve developed the following guidelines. Please take a moment to review them carefully. Some require your participation, while others are simple, common-sense practices.

Post Size Limit:
SMUG posts are limited to 40K in size to ensure the smooth operation of the list. We hope this change causes no inconvenience.

Guidelines:

  • Post Size: Aim for 2K–6K for typical posts.
  • Plain Text Only: Always send posts in plain text to avoid formatting issues.
  • Limit Posts to 10K or Less: Avoid rich text, HTML formatting, icons, logos, and backgrounds.
  • Trim Replies: When replying, include only what’s necessary to maintain context.
  • Need Help? Contact your helpdesk or IT team for assistance in sending plain text emails.

Thank you for respecting these guidelines and for your continued support of the SMUG list!

Staying On-Topic
SMUG focuses on topics related to credit unions using Symitar Systems (hardware, software, support, etc.). If your question relates to Symitar, it’s likely on-topic.

Prohibited Behavior

  • No Griping, Bashing, Flaming, or Selling: Job postings may be allowed, but no advertising or product promotions.*
  • Vendor Issues: Contact vendors directly for problems. The list is not a place to vent frustrations or escalate issues. Spreading rumors or inflaming others is inappropriate.
  • Public Forum Reminder: All messages are visible to everyone on the list. Send private replies (like “Thank you” or “Me too”) directly to the person instead of the entire list.

Privacy & Respect
This is a private list, and shared information is for members only. Do not share someone else’s information without their permission.

Reply Etiquette

  • Reasonable Quoting: Quote only enough of the original message to maintain context.
  • No Shouting: Avoid using ALL CAPS, which is considered shouting. Also, avoid using all lowercase, which can be hard to read.
  • Avoid Emotional Responses: Don’t send messages in anger. Take time to reconsider before replying.
  • Don’t Be Annoying: Consistent disruptive behavior may result in removal from the list.

Additional Considerations

  • No Attachments: Attachments are stripped by the server. Use plain text emails to avoid issues.
  • Avoid HTML Formatting: Fancy formatting, images, and backgrounds can cause problems for other users.

Footnotes:
Vendors (including freelancers and CUSOs) are allowed to “lurk” on the list but must not advertise or promote their products. Violations will be addressed by the Smugmaster and may result in removal.
